Amsterdam in Winter

I come from a place where winters in the city are gloomy and grey. Amsterdam in the winter season is unlike my hometown: it's bright, full of life, and always has something to offer to a curious eye.

Tram signals and streetlamps, the purple glow of the Bijlmer Parktheater on the water at night, warm light from a food cart selling oliebollen and appelflappen — you can see lights and colors everywhere. Even on overcast days the river reflects the towers at Amstelplein, and a modern grid of windows turns the sky into a band of grey and orange. The series shows how the city responds to the winter season: with muted colors, reflections, artificial light, and people still outside.

The City in the Water

Canals and river tie the set together. Boats at the quay, a wooden houseboat with potted plants and a flag, rowers on calm water, two people sitting on a platform by the docked boats. A graffiti-covered bridge over a canal, the colours doubled in the water. Concrete and reeds along the water’s edge, and in the background the line separating neighborhoods. Water is the constant: still, reflective, and full of life even in winter.

Facades and Parks

The city appears as facades and edges: wood-paneled mansions, tall office buildings with spires, dark vertical slats and glass doors, a half-finished building behind the boats. They sit beside paths, canals, and parks rather than dominating. There is sometimes something in between — bare branches, a scooter, a person in a puffer jacket — so the architecture feels part of daily use, not postcard views.

Beyond the canals and streets, winter softens the parks. Snow on the branches turns the trees into quiet sculptures and the path into a strip of white. In Beatrixpark, a single leafless tree on grass with fallen leaves and strong sunlight, elsewhere, a path along an ivy-covered bank and bare trees against a partly cloudy blue sky. Over a still, dark lake, branches and sky repeat in the water.

Open and Luminous

Amsterdam in Winter is not grey and closed off, but bright and alive. It uses light, water, and reflection to show a city that stays vivid in the cold, and uses parks, boats, and small human moments to show that the offer is there for anyone willing to look.
